“I’ll Always Be The Brightest Star At Night That Loves You”
As the sun set, so did night took place. Though it was accompanied by the cold breeze of wind, still, a special event took place in a barrio. It was the tradition of this place that there will be a special ball for everybody, both young and old. Old folks also have a saying that whoever a person dances with in this special event is their soul mate. Alas! After sometime of preparation, the music finally started. Sweet music filled the air and the dance floors have been flooded by people wearing smiles with eyes sparkling with love and excitement. Even the young look like couples while dancing gracefully. But sat on one of the corners, was a little girl sitting all alone, maybe at the age of five. All she did was sit there, while watching the other people dance happily. Then, a little boy came near to her, maybe also at the age of five.
Boy: Hi. (Then sat beside her)
Girl: … …
Boy: Why are you so quiet and sad? You should at least smile.
Girl: Why should I?
Boy: You ask me why you should? Well, it’s because we’re here in an event that’s only happening every seven years. You should already be dancing with your partner right now.
Girl: But I don’t have any partner.
Boy: I can be one.
Girl: (kind of shock and looked straight to his eyes) You’re sure?
Boy: Do I look like I’m kidding?
Girl: … … (Then looks at the ground)
Boy (sighs) : (kneels and takes out his right hand) To the most beautiful girl in this place, may you be my dance tonight?
Girl: (Opens her mouth and eyes widely in shock) … … Boy: -please…
Girl: O… ok… okay.
Boy: Then let’s go. (Then grabs her hand) (On the dance floor)
Boy: Come on, let’s dance.
Girl: B… bu… but… Boy: Hmmm?
Girl: But I don’t know how to dance.
Boy: Don’t worry, I’ll teach you, just follow me and you’ll be okay. (They danced)
(After sometime)
(Girl steps on his foot) Boy: Oww…
Girl: Sorry.
Boy: Don’t worry its okay, everyone does that in their first time. Maybe you’re just getting a little tired, let’s go to a special place.
(Then grabs her hand and runs) They run, across many trees until they made it to the special place. There is a big tree where you can sat on and watch the stars clearly
Girl: Wow, this place is beautiful. (Then smiles)
Boy (Blushes a little) : O, of, of course. Come on, let’s sit under that big tree so we can watch the stars. (Wow, I didn’t know her smile was really that beautiful)
(Under the big tree)
Girl: Wow, the stars are really beautiful.
Boy: You know the sayings of some old people in this place?
Girl: Nope, what is it?
Boy: Well, they said that whoever you take in this place after that dance is your soul mate.
Girl: What’s a soul mate?
Boy: Well it’s a person who is destined with you, meaning, the one who you will love forever.
Girl: So you mean you took me to this place because you love me?
Boy (blushes) : O, of, of course not. It’s because, because… (He tried to think of some excuse, but no words came out of his mouth)
(Long silence)
(Both looking straight to each others eyes)
(Then, a shooting star comes in sight)
Girl: Look! (Then points to where she saw the shooting star) It’s a shooting star! You know, they say that whenever you see a shooting star, make a wish, and it will come true.
Boy: Oh. T… th… then make a wish.
Girl (closes her eyes and wishes) : … …
Boy: (She’s really beautiful) … …
Girl (Yawns) : I’m getting sleepy.
Boy: Do you want to go back?
Girl: Nope, let’s stay just a little longer.
Boy: Okay.
Girl: May I rest on your shoulder?
Boy: Wh… What? (Did I hear it right?)
Girl: Nothing.
Boy (Blushes) : O… ok… okay.
Girl (Rests her head on his shoulder) : You know, the sky is really beautiful today.
Boy (Slips his tongue) : So as you.
Girl: Huh?
Boy: (Blushes) : N… no… nothing, that’s right, it’s nothing.
Girl (Smiles, but does not show it) : Oh.
(After some time)
Boy (Noticed that his shoulder is getting wet then looks at her) : … … (She’s already asleep, but her eyes are wet, did she cried?) I’ll always be the brightest star at night that loves you. (Then falls asleep too)
—
(Feels a push) ? : Martin, Martin wake up.
Martin (wakes up from sleep) : Ha? What?
? : You’ve fallen asleep again.
Martin: Again?
? : Come on, get your notebook and ball pen, our teacher is giving us a test.
Martin (Gets his things) : Thanks for waking me up, Andrew.
Andrew: Just let me copy from some of your answers and it’ll be all right.
Martin: Okay. (While answering the test)
Martin: (I kept on dreaming of that dream again, maybe it’s because there will be a dance again. Though it was seven years ago, that event is still fresh in my mind. It’s funny I guess, because when I wake up after falling asleep while looking at her, she’s already gone, I guess she was just a visitor. I wonder why she cried? Or did she?) … …
Andrew: Hey Martin. (Then waves his hand in front of Martin’s eyes)
Martin: What?
Andrew: The bell already rang, were already leaving.
Martin: Oh, oh yeah. (While walking outside the school)
Andrew: You know? I noticed that these past days or weeks, that you’re not in yourself. Do you have any problem?
Martin: Of course not, it’s just – (interrupted)
Janice (Martin’s crush) : Hi Martin. Are you already going home?
Martin: Y… ye… yes.
Janice: By the way, do you already have a dance for the event?
Martin: N… no… nope.
Janice: Oh. (Then leaves)
Martin: … …
Andrew: Now I know what your problem is.
Martin: Ha? Andrew: She’s your problem, right?
Martin (Blushes a little) : What are you saying, me and Janice are just friends.
Andrew: Friends? Or lovers?
Martin: Andrew, stop it!!!
Andrew: Okay, okay. See you tomorrow. (Then leaves)
Martin: Okay. (Then goes home)
(In his room before he sleeps) (The phone rings)
Martin (Answers the phone) : Hello? ? : Martin, did I wake you up?
Martin: Oh Trisha (His best friend), nope, I was just about to sleep.
Trisha: Oh. Umm… do you already have a dance for the event?
Martin: Nope, but maybe Janice.
Trisha: (Her voice a little sad) Oh. Okay. Bye.
Martin: Bye. (Then goes back to his bed)
Martin: Wonder why her voice seemed sad when I said Janice? Hmm… maybe it’s just nothing. (Then sleeps)
(The Next Day)
(School)
(Everybody is busy decorating the whole school because of the special event)
Martin: Hey Janice, be careful up there, maybe I should be the one to decorate that.
Janice (While on a ladder) : Don’t worry, I’ll be alright.
(Then a student carrying some things, accidentally bumps to the ladder)
Janice: (Screams) Help!!!
Martin: Janice!!! (Then runs as fast as he can to save her)
(Martin catches her but accidentally kisses her on the lips)
Martin (Blushes) : Sorry…
Janice: It was just an accident.
Some Students: Uyy!!!
Martin (Blushes more) : Ha?
(Then a teacher comes in and tells them to get back to their work)
Trisha: Would you also save me if I fall?
Martin: (Didn’t heard it) Ha?
Trisha: Nothing… (Bell rings and class ends)
(While walking home)
Martin: Hey Trisha, wait up.
Trisha (Just walks like she didn’t heard anything) : … …
Martin: Why are you in a hurry?
Trisha: … …
Martin: Do you want me to walk you home?
Trisha: … …
Martin: Hey bes…
Trisha (shouts) : Why don’t you just walk with Janice!?! (Then leaves)
Martin: Ha? What’s with her?
(Then goes home)
(Martin’s Room)
Martin: (Still thinking on what happened in school) Wonder what’s with bes? She looks sad… maybe I should call her. (Gets the phone and dials Trisha’s number) (Trisha answers the phone)
Trisha: Hello?
Martin: Hey Trisha, umm… are you alright?
Trisha: … …
Martin (sighs) : Do you have any problem?
Trisha: … …
Martin: Please answer…
Trisha: … …
Martin: Bes, I’m worried about you because in these past days, you seemed to have been sad and quiet.
Trisha: Don’t worry about me, just worry about Janice. (Sob) (Then puts the phone down)
Martin: Ha? Did I hear her sob? Maybe, maybe she was crying… but why? … …maybe I should just ask her tomorrow.
(Then falls asleep… without noticing a tear rolling down his cheek)
(The Next Day)
(School)
(After Class)
(Martin sees Trisha and runs to her) Martin: Hey Trisha.
Trisha: (Just walks away again) … …
Martin: (Grabs Trisha’s hand) I got to say something to you.
Trisha: Just say it so I can already leave.
Martin: D…di…did you c…cr…cry last night?
Trisha: Does it bother you if I did?
Martin: Of course it does, it’s because, because…
Trisha: Because what?
Martin: It’s because… … because I lo- (Interrupted)
Janice: Hey Martin!!! Martin: Ha? (Then looks behind him)
Janice: Tomorrow’s the big day. Martin: Tomorrow?
Janice: It’s because tomorrow’s the special event, right?
Martin: Oh yeah, (Then remembers Trisha) Trisha! (But Trisha already left)
Janice: See you tomorrow. (Then leaves)
Martin: Yeah, tomorrow… (Then goes home)
(Trisha’s Room)
Trisha: Why is it on the many people that I will fall for, why is it had to be Martin? I wish he’d say he loves me. (Then stands up and goes to the window and opens it)
Trisha (Shivers) : Wow, the wind’s cold breeze is back again. It brings back memories. I still remember it, he thought I was already asleep so he said something like he loves me… not like Martin. (Looks up in the sky) (Sighs) I wonder where’s the brightest star that loves me? (Then suddenly remembers Martin) He wouldn’t… would he?
(Then closes the window and goes back to sleep… …without noticing a tear rolling down her cheek)
(The Next Day)
(Martin’s Room)
Martin: The sun already set and night already took place, maybe I should be going too. (Then sighs) Why do I still feel sad even though I will dance with Janice?
(Then goes to school for the special event)
(Trisha’s Room)
Trisha: Should I still go even though I don’t have any partner? (Then sighs) Maybe that boy is still here and would ask me for a dance.
(Then goes to school for the special event)
(School)
Janice: Hey Martin, (Then runs to Martin) Come on, let’s dance.
Martin: O…ok…okay… (While dancing) Though Martin’s dancing with Janice, his heart still beats for Trisha.
Martin: This isn’t right…
Janice: Ha?
Martin: (Let’s go of Janice’s hand and runs away)
He ran across many trees until he made it to the special place.
Martin: This place hasn’t change even for a bit since seven years.
(Then sits under the big tree and watches the stars)
(Then Martin hears a sob and looks around the tree. He sees Trisha crying all alone)
Trisha: (While wiping her tears) What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be dancing with Janice?
Martin: Nope, I just want to watch the stars.
Trisha: Oh…
Martin: Trisha, why did you cry?
Trisha: I just felt like it.
(Short Silence)
Martin: You know? This place brings back a lot of memories to me.
Trisha: … …
Martin: It was seven years ago, there was also a dance that time and I dance with a girl and also took her to this place. She is so beautiful, especially when she smiles.
Trisha: … … (He must be talking about Janice)
(Then tears started to fall from her eyes)
Martin: I said something about soul mate which made us stare each other for a while. Good thing a shooting star came passing by.
Trisha: … … (Wait a second, this sounds familiar)
Martin: Then, I said something to her, umm… …
Trisha: That you’ll always be the brightest star that loves you? Martin: Yeah that’s right… … (Then looks at Trisha who is still crying)
Trisha: You know? That boy was my first love, and I still love him today, but he loves another girl.
(Long Silence)
(Then, a shooting star comes in sight)
(Martin looks at Trisha, whose eyes are closed)
Martin: … … (Maybe she’s wishing something)
Trisha: … … (I wish he’d say he loves me)
Martin (Whispers) : I’m so stupid for not noticing, that I love you.
Trisha: Ha? (Then looks at Martin)
Martin: (Kneels and puts his right hand out) To the most beautiful girl and the one I love, will you be my dance tonight?
Trisha: Y…ye…yes. (Then puts her hand on Martin’s right hand)
Martin: Then let’s go. (Then runs back to school)
(School)
Trisha: Were too late, the dance is already over…
Martin: Is it also too late to say I love you?
Trisha: (Hugs Martin) Of course it’s not.
Martin: Then okay… … “I Love You”.
Trisha: (Kisses Martin on the lips) I love you, too. Martin: Just remember, that I’m always the brightest star at night that loves you.
The End
